PANDEMICS: The Leprosy Pandemic in New Brunswick – Mid 1800s


As we all live within the constraints imposed by the the Covid-19 pandemic, pandemics are not new and we are somewhat aware of the horrors in the past. Although, not caused by a virus, a bacterial Leprosy pandemic devastated Tracadie, New Brunswick back in the mid 1800s. Writer John Wood’s publication, The Lepers of Tracadie, describes in detail the impacts of this disease as written in actual publications from the time. We read this account with the realization that our science has, regardless of the impacts today, created medical treatments that vastly reduce these impacts. Read this with that in mind.
